Central Asian Mammals Migration and Linear Infrastructure Atlas - CMS Technical Series No. 41

The Central Asian Mammals Migration and Linear Infrastructure Atlas explores the challenges migratory mammals face due to expanding infrastructure across the region’s diverse landscapes, from Mongolia’s deserts to the Himalayas. These animals depend on vast, connected habitats for access to food, water, and safety. However, the rapid development of roads, fences, railways, and pipelines is fragmenting these habitats and disrupting critical migration routes, threatening the survival of species that have relied on them for millennia.

The Second Edition of the Atlas builds on its 2019 predecessor by incorporating new data, updated species ranges from satellite tracking, and refined analysis across eight CAMI Range States. It highlights areas where infrastructure poses the greatest risks and offers mitigation strategies for ten key migratory species, including the Saiga Antelope and Snow Leopard. Aligned with international conservation goals like the CMS and the Samarkand Strategic Plan, the Atlas serves as a vital tool for policymakers and stakeholders, promoting science-based solutions to protect ecological connectivity while supporting sustainable development.
