New Maps Reveal Saiga Migrations and Threats Across Kazakhstan
Herds of saiga antelope that teetered on the brink of extinction two decades ago now traverse the Kazakh Steppe in the millions, as reflected in a new set of migration maps published today. Thanks to conservation efforts, saiga numbers have surged and their massive migrations across Central Asia’s landscapes – some over 300 km long – have also returned.

Government representatives from the wider Central Asian region endorsed a six-year work programme for the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI). In Kyrgyzstan, extensive poaching during the 1990s severely impacted snow leopard populations in the country and prompted the implementation of measures to address poaching and illegal trade to protect this endangered species. These activities play a crucial role in combating both poaching and illegal wildlife trade, helping to protect snow leopards and their ecosystems.
